The Hustle - Economies Without Scale

This ongoing portrait series focuses on the hustle. Traveling through India I was struck by the entrepeneurialism of the people. What I didn’t see was big brands like Starbucks but what I did see was a guy set up in an alleyway with a hot plate and a homemade recipe for Massala Tea. What I didn’t see was a big box store for home improvement but what I did see was an entire section of town of individual tradesmen and crafts people plying their skills to provide services for their communities and earn an income for their families. Having spent the last 30+ years working for some of the biggest brands in the world that are only concerned about scale and profit, these scenes struck me as each of these individuals carved out a space in an economy that wasn’t looking out for them. This is an ongoing series that will continue to evolve and expand.
